Educational Technology Organizations
International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) - The ISTE community is advancing excellence in learning and teaching through innovative and effective uses of technology.
ISTE offers educational technology standards to use as a guide to teaching effectively and developing professionally in an increasingly digital world. Technology literacy is an important part of modern society. With the globalizing economy and technological advances continue to place importance on a highly skilled labor force. I agree with this statement. We, as educators, must prepare our students to be competitive in the real world.
International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) - Their mission is to improve the performance of individuals and organizations through the application of Human Performance Technology. Founded in 1962, the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) is the leading international association dedicated to improving productivity and performance in the workplace. ISPI represents more than 10,000 international and chapter members throughout the United States, Canada, and 40 other countries. They provide conferences, books, periodicals, and research. Members include: Performance technologists, training directors, human resources managers, instructional technologists, human factors practitioners, and organizational consultants. They work in a variety of settings including business, academia, government, health services, banking, and the armed forces.
I chose this organization because their members include a variety of different careers. I too want to improve performance, the performance of my students.
My Definition of Educational Technology
Educational technology to me is the process of implementing technology into every part of the educational process to improve learning and performance. Teachers can use technology to design, develop, implement, evaluate, and manage instruction, as well as, for administrative duties. Teachers can utilize technology to differentiate between the students different learning styles. Technology can enrich student learning and met each objective. Being in the library gives me many opportunities to instruct and engage the students in the use of technology. The use of databases, the search for information, and more, give me the opportunity to create, use, and manage the appropriate technological processes and resources the students need.
Mark Prensky coined the term digital native in his work Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants published in 2001. Prensky states that education is the single largest problem facing the digital world as digital immigrant instructors are struggling to teach a population that speaks an entirely new language. Immigrants suffer complications in teaching natives how to understand an environment which is "native" to them and foreign to Immigrants. I had heard the terms, but did not know their origin. I really enjoyed reading the article. This is part of my philosophy as well, educators need to be trained so they can “talk the talk and walk the walk” with their students.
Technology Project 2
A concept map is a visual organizer that can enhance students' understanding of a new concept. Using a graphic organizer, students think about the concept in several ways. Most concept map organizers encourage students to answer questions such as, "What is it? What is it like? What are some examples?" Concept maps deepen understanding and comprehension.
I am talking about character analysis with the 4th graders in the library. I used the characters from book Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White. I created an account with the website Mind42.com. http://mind42.com/ Here I was able to create a concept map. I easily added a link to Wikipedia about the book, I made a note stating the authors name, E. B. White, and I added a link to an image of the cover. I also added images to each character trait hoping to make each one more meaningful. Finally, I added a picture of each character. I think the students will develop a better understanding of the concept of character analysis by "seeing it".
Using a diagram like this, the student could develop a paper that would analysis characters in a story. I think this would be a very useful tool in the classroom and the library.
